Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a Navratna CPSE, delivered two state-of-the-art warships to the Indian Navy on December 20, 2024. These include the stealth frigate ‘Nilgiri’ of Project 17A and the stealth destroyer ‘Surat’ of Project 15B.
Key details of the warships:
- Nilgiri (P17A Class): The first of its class, Nilgiri incorporates advanced stealth features, improved survivability, and cutting-edge weapon systems. It is designed indigenously by the Warship Design Bureau and has all-round capabilities against enemy submarines, warships, and aircraft.
- Surat (P15B Class): This fourth destroyer of its class is equipped with BrahMos missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, and indigenous anti-submarine systems. It is designed to operate independently or as the flagship of a naval task force.
Both ships showcase significant indigenous content, with Surat achieving 72% indigenization, furthering India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The timely delivery and superior combat capabilities of these vessels reaffirm MDL’s reputation as a leader in warship and submarine construction for the nation.
