Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and global defence major BAE Systems have secured a major contract from the Indian Army for licensed manufacturing of the BvS10 ‘Sindhu’, an all-terrain armoured vehicle designed for extreme environments. The confirmation came via an official stock-exchange filing from L&T on November 19, 2025.

According to the press release, the Indian Army has formally signed the agreement under which L&T will indigenously produce the upgraded BvS10 Sindhu variant at its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira. The platform will be manufactured with full technical and design support from BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original developer of the BvS10.

Made for India’s toughest terrains

The BvS10 Sindhu is built to operate across high-altitude snowfields, deserts, marshlands and amphibious zones — precisely the kind of challenging terrain where the Army frequently deploys troops. The upgraded variant successfully completed extensive trials in both sea-level and high-altitude regions, emerging as a top-performing mobility platform.

“The BvS10’s unmatched mobility and performance in extreme climatic conditions are critical attributes highlighted by the Indian Army,” said Tommy Gustafsson Rask, Managing Director at BAE Systems Hägglunds.

Boost to Make in India

Under the licensed manufacturing model:

  • L&T will locally produce the vehicles at industrial scale
  • A full logistics support package for maintenance and life-cycle sustainment is included
  • The deal strengthens India’s defence industrial base with technology transfer, indigenous capability building and supply-chain resilience

Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President & Head of L&T’s Precision Engineering & Systems business, said the contract reaffirms L&T’s strengths in defence systems engineering and manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

Modular, amphibious and mission-ready

The BvS10 Sindhu comes with articulated mobility, enabling it to manoeuvre over ice, snow, rock, sand, mud, swamps and steep gradients — and even swim through flooded or coastal waters.

Its modular structure allows it to be configured for multiple operations, including:

  • Personnel transport
  • Command and control
  • Ambulance
  • Vehicle repair/recovery
  • Logistics support
  • Surveillance
  • Weapon-mounted combat roles

The vehicle is already in service in nations such as Sweden, the UK, Austria, France, the Netherlands and Ukraine, with Germany also placing orders.

Strategic significance

This marks the first expansion of the BvS10 platform into Asia — a milestone that underscores the vehicle’s global demand and India’s rising defence-manufacturing capabilities. L&T and BAE Systems stated that the partnership represents a “forward-looking model” for global security of supply, integrating world-class technology with Indian manufacturing strength.
