Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) for the production of SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft, marking a significant step in India’s aviation manufacturing history.

The agreement was signed in Moscow on October 27, 2025, by Shri Prabhat Ranjan of HAL and Mr. Oleg Bogomolov of PJSC-UAC, in the presence of Dr. D.K. Sunil, CMD of HAL, and Mr. Vadim Badeka, Director General of UAC.

The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft already in operation with over 200 units across 16 commercial airlines globally. Under this MoU, HAL will gain the rights to manufacture the SJ-100 for domestic customers, supporting India’s regional air connectivity goals under the UDAN scheme.

This marks the first full passenger aircraft production in India since HAL’s AVRO HS-748, which was produced between 1961 and 1988. The partnership reflects deepened Indo-Russian aerospace cooperation and is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment opportunities while boosting the private aerospace supply chain.

Over the next decade, India’s aviation sector is estimated to require 200 jets in this category for regional routes and an additional 350 aircraft to serve Indian Ocean destinations. HAL said the initiative aligns with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, strengthening India’s position in civil aviation manufacturing.
