Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) announced that it has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SWAN Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd. The move aims to strengthen India’s indigenous capabilities in the commercial shipbuilding sector.
The MoU, signed on April 7, 2025, at GRSE Bhavan in Kolkata, is aligned with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. It marks a strategic partnership where both GRSE and SWAN Defence will collaborate on a non-exclusive basis to design and construct commercial vessels and offshore structures, with a focus on catering to global clients and national maritime needs.
The collaboration will enable the two entities to pool their infrastructure, expertise, and design capabilities. It will also include shared efforts in scouting commercial shipbuilding projects, evolving standard platform designs, and implementing efficient build strategies to enhance project turnaround. The partnership aims to build a robust vendor ecosystem and optimize costs while creating employment opportunities through local skill development.
GRSE stated that the alliance will also cover joint efforts in trials, commissioning, and long-term repair of vessels, promoting a sustainable commercial shipbuilding model in India.
The company, a Mini Ratna Category I and Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, has delivered over 790 vessels to date, including 110 warships—the highest among Indian shipyards. GRSE has previously built ships for international clients like Mauritius, Seychelles, and Guyana.
