Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H), have joined forces to establish the Centre of Clean Coal Energy and Net Zero (CLEANZ) in Hyderabad. The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on March 7, aims to advance clean coal technologies and diversify coal utilization, aligning with India’s Net Zero commitments.

CIL has committed Rs. 98 Crores over five years to set up this Centre of Excellence, which is expected to become financially self-sustainable post-initial funding. The collaboration will focus on developing cutting-edge technologies for sustainable coal utilization, including carbon capture, coal gasification, and AI-driven solutions.

The initiative, under the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER), will also emphasize low-grade and rejected coal utilization, enhanced methane recovery, and critical mineral extraction. Additionally, CLEANZ will train CIL officials in advanced technologies and skill enhancement.

This partnership marks a significant step in India’s efforts to boost research capabilities in the coal sector while advancing clean energy solutions.
