Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) has achieved a groundbreaking milestone with the foundation stone laying ceremony of India’s first Polylactic Acid (PLA) biopolymer manufacturing facility in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The event, graced by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath Ji, marks a significant step in India’s biopolymer revolution.
Strategically located next to BCML’s existing sugar factory, this state-of-the-art facility integrates operational synergies for enhanced resource efficiency and optimized supply chain management. With a massive investment of Rs. 2,850 Crores, the plant leverages cutting-edge global technology to set a new benchmark in the biopolymer industry.
This pioneering facility is the world’s first PLA plant powered entirely by renewable energy. It will produce 80,000 tonnes of 100% bio-based, industrially compostable PLA annually. PLA serves as an eco-friendly alternative to banned single-use plastic (SUP) items like straws, disposable cutlery, food trays, bottles, curd cups, and carry bags. Additionally, PLA can be anaerobically digested to generate biogas and fertilizer, significantly reducing waste and emissions.
Aligned with the Uttar Pradesh Bioplastic Industry Policy 2024, the project is set to generate 225 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect employment opportunities. Collaborations with technical institutions will further empower youth and women in sustainable industries, driving economic growth.
This project strengthens India’s self-reliance (‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’) and cleanliness (‘Swachh Bharat’) initiatives while promoting large-scale PLA adoption across packaging, food service, biomedical, and textile sectors.
