Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private sector thermal power generator, has secured a major breakthrough in Bihar’s power sector after receiving a Letter of Award from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. for a long-term electricity supply agreement spanning 25 years. The company will supply power from a 2,400 MW ultra supercritical greenfield plant to be developed at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district. The award has been granted by BSPGCL on behalf of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd., with the formal Power Supply Agreement expected to follow soon.
The project marks a significant investment in Bihar’s energy infrastructure, with Adani Power committing nearly $3 billion towards building the plant and associated facilities. The company had earlier emerged as the lowest bidder in a highly competitive tariff-based bidding process conducted by BSPGCL, offering to supply electricity at ₹6.075 per unit. Apart from enhancing the state’s power availability, the project is set to generate large-scale employment, creating nearly 10,000 to 12,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 3,000 permanent roles once operations commence.
This development comes at a time when India’s power demand is projected to grow at an unprecedented pace, with peak requirements expected to rise from the current level of about 250 GW to nearly 400 GW by 2031-32 and crossing 700 GW by 2047. To address this rising demand, the government has laid out a roadmap to add approximately 100 GW of new thermal power capacity by 2035. Despite the ongoing transition towards renewable energy, thermal power will continue to play a crucial role in providing reliable, round-the-clock base-load power and balancing the grid to ensure energy security.
For Adani Power, the Bhagalpur ultra supercritical project is not only a strategic expansion of its portfolio but also a step forward in reinforcing its leadership in the country’s energy sector. By securing this 25-year contract, the company is poised to make a lasting impact on Bihar’s economic growth, strengthening industrial and residential power supply while supporting large-scale job creation and infrastructure development in the state.
