Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has marked a significant achievement in indigenous defence manufacturing. The company successfully delivered a Production-Grade Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo (WGHWT) to the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) at its Visakhapatnam Unit on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
The event saw the participation of key figures such as Dr. R. V. Hara Prasad, Distinguished Scientist & Director General (NS&M); Commodore A. Madhavarao (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director of BDL; Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director NSTL, along with teams from BDL, NSTL, and the Indian Navy.
BDL, acting as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP), collaborated with NSTL to realise India’s first indigenous production-grade Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo. This milestone achievement is a testament to the country’s strides towards self-reliance in advanced naval weapon systems, aligning with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The torpedo, available in both practice and combat configurations, features an advanced technology suite with state-of-the-art homing and propulsion systems. It also includes sophisticated search, attack, and re-attack capabilities, which significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy.
This accomplishment highlights the successful collaborative efforts between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), specifically NSTL, and BDL, in fostering a robust indigenous defence ecosystem. The productionisation of such a complex underwater weapon system underscores India’s growing expertise in cutting-edge naval technologies and involves several industrial partners, including MSMEs.
Dignitaries at the event praised the dedicated efforts of scientists, engineers, and production teams involved in the project, recognising their contribution to this landmark achievement.
