Alexander Maslyakov, the host and director of the KVN program, passed away at 82 in Moscow, as reported by the KVN press service. Maslyakov, who became a symbol of humor and satire in Russia, had been battling serious health issues since contracting COVID-19 in 2022, which compounded an inoperable lung tumor diagnosed the same year. The cause of death was not officially disclosed, but media sources suggest it was related to lung cancer.
Maslyakov’s contribution to Russian television is unmatched. He began his career in 1964 while still a student and went on to host numerous programs, including “Hello, We Are Looking for Talent!” and “What? Where? When?”. He became pivotal of KVN in 1965, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the show into a cornerstone of Russian entertainment. In 1990, he and his wife, Svetlana, established the Creative Television Association AMiK, which owns the KVN brand.
Despite his declining health, Maslyakov continued to be involved with KVN, hosting his final game in 2022. His health, however, deteriorated significantly afterward, limiting his appearances on the show. By 2023, he was no longer able to host and officially stepped down in early 2024. Sources close to the presenter noted that his condition had worsened in recent months, with significant breathing and speech difficulties.
The Shot Telegram channel reported that Maslyakov had been in poor health for the past six months, often requiring assistance to move. While undergoing supportive treatment, doctors informed him that further medical intervention would not be effective. Maslyakov’s death marks the end of an era for KVN and Russian television, with many remembering him as a legend who defined generations of humor and wit.
Maslyakov is survived by his wife and remains a revered figure in Russian media history, celebrated for his enduring legacy on television.
