Russia’s TNT Channel has started production on a modern adaptation of the iconic Soviet comedy “The Diamond Arm,” originally directed by Leonid Gaidai. Set for a New Year’s Eve release, the film, titled “The Undiamond Arm,” brings back beloved characters with a fresh, satirical take on contemporary issues.

The plot of the new film, which blends the classic comedy with spy thriller elements from the Bond series, unfolds in a fictional Soviet setting of the present day. It follows Semyon Semyonovich, portrayed by Timur Batrutdinov, on a cruise where he ends up in Dubai, the final foreign port. There, smugglers, played by Alexey Vorobyov and Maxim Lagashkin, substitute the film’s iconic diamonds with modern contraband such as smartphones, Dyson hair dryers, and other goods imported through alternative channels.

Directed by Misha Semichev and Roman Kim, with Andrey Shelkov and Maxim Tkachenko serving as creative producers, the film promises numerous nods to popular culture. Viewers can expect references to “Joker,” “Harley Quinn,” “Blade Runner,” and “Sin City,” alongside modern versions of classic songs like “Island of Bad Luck” and “My Marmalade.” Songs such as “I Need a Hero” and “Skyfall” will also feature prominently, blending nostalgia with contemporary vibes.

TNT’s latest project has drawn attention from various media outlets, including the Kinopoisk service, which reported the news via its Telegram channel. The film is also produced by high-profile figures, including Tina Kandelaki, Arkady Vodakhov, Boris Khanchalyan, and Marina Razumova.
