Southeast Asian countries are increasingly expressing interest in acquiring the Russian-Indian supersonic BrahMos missile, a key representative of the BrahMos Joint Venture revealed at the Army 2024 forum. Alexander Maksichev, co-director of BrahMos from the Russian side, noted that ongoing negotiations could soon lead to new contracts in the region.
Currently, the Philippines stands as the only country in Southeast Asia to have purchased BrahMos missiles. However, Maksichev hinted at potential new customers, stating that negotiations are actively underway. He mentioned that a new customer is likely to emerge once a contract is finalized. Although he did not disclose specific countries, he indicated that the interest comes from the same region as the Philippines, suggesting that another Southeast Asian nation might soon join the ranks of BrahMos operators.
The BrahMos missile, known for its speed and precision, has been a point of interest for various nations due to its advanced capabilities. The missile, developed through a collaboration between India and Russia, has been marketed as a versatile weapon system that can be deployed from land, sea, and air platforms. Its supersonic speed and accuracy make it a formidable addition to any defense arsenal.
The ongoing Army 2024 forum, held from August 12 to 14 in the Moscow Region, serves as a platform for showcasing advanced armaments, military vehicles, and related technologies. The event has attracted global attention, with numerous countries participating and expressing interest in the latest military innovations. TASS, the official strategic media partner of the forum, reported that the BrahMos missile has been one of the highlights, drawing attention from military officials and defense experts alike.
The potential expansion of BrahMos sales into other Southeast Asian countries underscores the growing defense collaboration between Russia and India. It also reflects the increasing importance of Southeast Asia in global defense markets, where nations seek to bolster their military capabilities in response to regional security dynamics.
As the Army 2024 forum continues, more developments are expected, particularly in terms of international defense cooperation and technology transfers.
