Eight people, including a 10-year-old child and two teenagers, were injured in a Russian shelling attack on a village in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The incident was confirmed by Roman Mrochko, the regional head, in a statement on Monday.
The shelling struck the village in the early hours, targeting residential areas and causing significant damage to homes and local infrastructure. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they worked to extricate the injured from the debris. The victims, who suffered various degrees of injuries, were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Roman Mrochko condemned the attack, labeling it a “heinous act of aggression” and highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the shelling. “This brutal attack on our village is a stark violation of international law and human rights,” Mrochko stated. He called on the international community to condemn the assault and take action to protect Ukrainian civilians.
Local authorities reported extensive damage to the village, including the destruction of homes and community facilities. The regional administration is currently coordinating with humanitarian organizations to provide relief and support to the affected residents. Mrochko assured that efforts are underway to repair the damage and assist those who have been displaced by the attack.
International reaction to the shelling has been swift. The European Union, along with several human rights organizations, has denounced the attack and reiterated calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The United Nations has also expressed concern over the escalating violence and the impact on civilian populations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the attack by urging Western allies to increase their support for Ukraine. He emphasized the need for more advanced defensive systems to protect against such attacks and prevent further civilian casualties.
