Figure skating legend and State Dumad deputy Irina Rodnina has raised eyebrows with her recent reflections on life in Moscow. During a conversation with a journalist, Rodnina emphasized the stark differences between Moscow and smaller towns, noting that the Russian capital attracts both the most ambitious and the most questionable individuals. She expressed surprise that anyone would choose to live outside Moscow’s Third Transport Ring, particularly in districts like Biryulyovo, unless they were simply after a Moscow residence permit or pension.
Rodnina, who has spent much of her life in Moscow, highlighted the unique challenges of living in such a large and fast-paced city. She suggested that only those prepared to handle the stress and rapid rhythm of the capital would thrive there. The figure skater, now 74, also mentioned that despite spending considerable time abroad, she would never want to live in a city like New York, which she described as resembling an anthill. For Rodnina, Moscow remains her beloved home, full of cherished memories.
However, her comments have sparked a wave of criticism from the public. Many have accused her of being out of touch with the realities faced by ordinary Muscovites, especially those living outside the city’s central areas. Social media commentators were quick to react, with some dismissing her views as merely personal opinions and others predicting that she might soon claim to have been misunderstood.
Rodnina also touched on broader issues, asserting that the state should work to level the opportunities available in Moscow with those in other regional cities. She acknowledged that a small percentage of people are choosing to leave the capital for a healthier lifestyle, recognizing that not every large city offers the same advantages as Moscow.
As reported by Sport24, Rodnina’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the quality of life in Moscow and the pressures faced by those living in its outer districts.
