Putin stresses the importance of lasting peace in the South Caucasus

Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the critical need for peace in the South Caucasus, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to support Azerbaijani-Armenian normalization and regional stability.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated the importance of achieving a lasting peace in the South Caucasus, highlighting it as a key interest for all regional states and peoples. His remarks came after productive discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Putin expressed confidence that enduring peace and stability in the South Caucasus align with the fundamental interests of all countries and communities in the region. He assured that Russia remains committed to facilitating the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and to supporting the signing of a peace treaty based on the trilateral agreements established in 2022 by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.

The Russian President emphasized Russia’s readiness to assist in border delimitation and demarcation efforts. He noted that Russia possesses relevant documents from the Soviet era and is prepared to aid in unblocking cross-border routes and establishing humanitarian connections.

Putin highlighted that both Russia and Azerbaijan are committed to upholding international law, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs. He underscored their coordinated efforts on key multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Looking ahead, Putin expressed a desire to welcome President Aliyev to the CIS summit in Moscow this October, as well as to the BRICS summit, where outreach meetings are also scheduled. He reiterated Russia’s dedication to fostering cooperation and resolving regional issues through diplomatic channels.
