Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed concern over the intensifying political rivalry in the United States, stating that the ongoing power struggle between Democrats and Republicans is contributing to rising global tensions. In a recent statement, Lavrov highlighted how both parties seem determined to outdo each other in appearing “tough,” which, according to him, is leading to an escalation in international conflicts.
Lavrov criticized the U.S. political climate, where each party is focused on proving itself stronger than the other, often at the expense of diplomacy and global stability. He warned that this competitive dynamic risks pushing the U.S. toward more aggressive foreign policies, further complicating international relations and increasing the risk of conflict. “The obsessive power struggle,” Lavrov stated, “is leading towards an escalation,” referencing how domestic politics in the U.S. are influencing its actions on the global stage.
Despite his concerns, Lavrov expressed optimism that there are reasonable voices within the U.S. political landscape capable of exerting influence. He said he was convinced that there are reasonable people in the USA who have some influence, implying that these people could help lower the risks connected to partisan competition and promote more deliberate foreign policy decisions.
Lavrov’s remarks come amid growing tension between Russia and the West, with both sides frequently trading accusations of aggressive behaviour and political interference. His statement reflects Russia’s long-standing critique of U.S. foreign policy, which it views as being driven more by internal political considerations than by the interests of global stability.
