HBO has dropped actor Miloš Bikovic from the upcoming season of The White Lotus following criticism from Ukraine over his pro-Russia stance. The decision was made after the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed displeasure at Bikovic’s involvement in the hit TV series. Filming for the new season, set to take place in Thailand, is scheduled to begin later this month, with Bikovic’s replacement yet to be announced.
Bikovic, a Serbian-Russian actor who gained Russian citizenship in 2021, has been an outspoken supporter of Russia, even receiving honors from President Vladimir Putin for his contributions to the country’s arts and culture. His inclusion in the show’s cast, which was revealed on January 17, alongside actors Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, and Michelle Monaghan, sparked outrage in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry took to social media to condemn HBO’s decision to cast Bikovic, questioning the network’s ethics in working with someone who supports Russia’s actions.
HBO responded to the criticism by stating that they have decided to part ways with Bikovic, confirming that the role would be recast. Although the network has not disclosed who will replace him, the decision marks a significant response to the growing backlash against Bikovic’s political views.
Bikovic, who has predominantly appeared in Slavic productions and is well-known in the region, responded to the decision by advocating for peace. He shared his personal experiences of growing up in a war-torn country, expressing his desire for all conflicts to cease and for love to prevail.
The previous seasons of The White Lotus received widespread acclaim, and the upcoming season is highly anticipated despite the recent controversy surrounding its cast.
