On the night of August 21-22, residents of Kalach-na-Donu in Volgograd Oblast reported hearing drones and explosions in the sky. The drones allegedly targeted the Marinovka air base near Oktyabrsky, according to local Telegram channels including Baza and Mash.
A video shared by a Kalach-na-Donu resident depicted two distinct sources of fire, while additional reports suggested that drones were also attempting attacks on Rostov and Voronezh oblasts. Governor Andrey Bocharov of Volgograd Oblast confirmed that a military facility was struck by drones. He stated that the air defense forces successfully intercepted the attack, destroying most of the incoming drones. Despite this, a fire erupted at the Russian Defence Ministry facility, although no casualties have been reported.
The Marinovka air base, situated 47 kilometers west of Volgograd and officially known as Volgograd (Marinovka), houses Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft from the 2nd Separate Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron, a unit under the 4th Air Force and Air Defence Forces Command. This air base plays a significant role in Russia’s military operations, making it a strategic target.
The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of military installations to drone warfare, an evolving threat that has increasingly been a focus of global military strategies. Local and regional authorities continue to assess the damage and reinforce defense measures to prevent future attacks.
