Legendary Russian actor Leonid Remnev dies during performance at 79

The news of his death was confirmed by Alexey Logachev, the former chief director of the theater, and the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Union of Theater Workers.

People’s Artist of Russia, Leonid Yakovlevich Remnev, passed away suddenly at the age of 79 while performing in the play “Vassa” at the Nizhny Novgorod Youth Theater. The incident occurred during the play when Remnev fell ill, and despite the efforts of the arriving medical team, he could not be saved. The news of his death was confirmed by Alexey Logachev, the former chief director of the theater, and the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Union of Theater Workers.

Remnev, who was born in the Ivanovo region in 1946, had an illustrious career that spanned over five decades. He began his journey in theater in 1972 after graduating from the Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) Theatre School. He later furthered his education by graduating from the history department of the Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N. I. Lobachevsky. His dedication to the arts was evident not only in his performances but also in his work as a teacher at the Gorky/Nizhny Novgorod Theatre School from 1978 to 2003.

Throughout his career, Remnev was known for his intelligence, emotional depth, and explosive temperament, which he brought to over 100 roles in both Russian and foreign classical repertoires, as well as contemporary works. His remarkable talent earned him several prestigious awards, including a nomination for the national Golden Mask award for his role in “The Last,” the Pushkin Prize, and multiple Nizhny Novgorod Prizes.

The Nizhny Novgorod Youth Theater expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of Remnev, highlighting his noble character and erudition. The theater extended its condolences to his family and friends, mourning the loss of an artist who dedicated 52 years of his life to the stage. This tragic event marks the end of an era for the Nizhny Novgorod theater community.
