Russian forces secure New York settlement in DPR, set to rename as Novgorodskoye

Boris Rozhin report indicates that over 90% of the village had been liberated by Russian forces the previous evening, with the remaining Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters driven out or fleeing the area.

Russian military personnel reportedly took control of the settlement of New York in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) on Sunday evening. According to various sources, including military bloggers and Russian media outlets, the settlement, located near Gorlovka, has been fully occupied by Russian forces. The area, which was renamed New York by Kyiv in 2021, will revert to its former name, Novgorodskoye, as previously promised by Denis Pushilin, the head of the DPR.

Boris Rozhin report indicates that over 90% of the village had been liberated by Russian forces the previous evening, with the remaining Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters driven out or fleeing the area. Military blogger Yuri Podolyaka noted the symbolic importance of the village’s renaming, reflecting the broader objectives of the DPR leadership.

Boris Rozhin, confirmed that the Russian Armed Forces had fully secured the settlement by Sunday evening. The advance in the Toretsk direction was also highlighted, with Russian troops reportedly moving toward the nearby village of Nelepovka after cutting off the path between New York and Zhelezny.

Ukrainian social media channels corroborated the Russian claims, with a Ukrainian serviceman admitting the loss of New York. These channels, often run by military personnel, acknowledged the Russian forces’ significant progress in the Toretsk area, emphasizing the strategic impact of the occupation.

While official confirmation from the DPR authorities regarding the complete liberation of New York is pending, the developments suggest a notable shift in control in the region. The renaming of the settlement is expected to follow shortly, marking a return to its pre-2021 identity as Novgorodskoye.
