There was a low-intensity explosion near the Israel Embassy at the center of Lutyens’ Delhi on Friday 28th January, 2021. According to the Delhi police, the explosion happened near the pavement and the windscreens of three cars nearby have been destroyed. No injuries have been reported so far.
After the blast, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) released alert at all airports, important installations and government buildings in lieu of the danger of the blast. Along with that, enhanced security measures have been placed.
Security has also been advanced at the office of the Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai.
The fire department received a call at 5:11 PM as the Beating Retreat ceremony was going on at Rajpath some kilometres away. The embassy is situated on APJ Abdul Kamal Road. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED), located inside a flower pot on the road divider is expected to be the reason of the blast. Police sources it seems that it was thrown from a moving vehicle.
Delhi Police Additional PRO Anil Mittal said, “A very low intensity improvised device went off… No injury to any person was reported and nor was there any damage except the glass panes of three vehicles parked nearby.” The police added that initial impressions suggest this was a malevolent attempt to create a commotion.
An official of the fire department said, “The mirrors of two to three cars are broken. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a tweet expressed his concern upon hearing the news. He tweeted, “Agencies are determining the nature and cause of the blast. Thankfully, no loss of life reported yet. Any attempt to disturb the peace of Delhi should be firmly dealt with.”
