Congress leader and ex-chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath has moved the Supreme Court and has challenged the decision of the Election Commission which revoked his ‘Star Campaigner’ status when the bye-election is on 3rd November. Kamal Nath is a prominent face of MP Congress and his campaign is expected to have an important impact on the by-election polls.

Election Commission revoked Kamal Nath’s star campaigner status on the grounds of violations of model code during his by-election campaign. A major conspiracy occurred when Kamal Nath referred to a BJP leader Imarti Devi as ‘Item’. Imarti Devi is an MLA candidate of BJP from Dabra. She was one of the 25 MLA’s who resigned from the Congress party to join BJP.

However, Kamal Nath regarded EC’s action as an attempt to suppress his voice. “Now the public will decide. There is an attempt to suppress my voice. There is an attempt to crush the voice of Congress. Truth can be disturbed, not defeated. The public will support the truth,” he tweeted

“Displeasure that Kamal Nath, despite being a leader of a political party, is repeatedly violating the provisions of model code of conduct and breaching ethical and dignified behaviour,” said EC. It also added that the decision has been taken after due consideration of the violations.

Kamal Nath has expressed regret over the remarks he made and said, he did not intend to insult anyone. However, he said there was no need for him to apologize. “Why should I apologize when I did not intend to insult anyone? If anyone felt insulted, I have already expressed regret,” the leader had said.

Later this became a huge conspiracy and Kamal Nath faced a lot of criticism, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said “Kamal Nath Ji is from my party but personally, I don’t like the type of language that he used…I don’t appreciate it, regardless of who he is. It is unfortunate.”

On Friday, Congress party leader Vivek Tankha called EC’s order undemocratic and tweeted “Order of ECI removing Kamal Nath Ji from the list of star campaigners two days before campaign closure on Nov 1 is completely undemocratic. Given without notice to Mr Kamal Nath and Congress party. We are approaching the Supreme Court to intervene and save democracy.”
