Hyundai Motor India Limited has formally entered a new phase of leadership with Tarun Garg assuming charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with effect from January 1, 2026. The appointment is significant as Garg becomes the first Indian national to lead HMIL since the company began operations nearly 29 years ago, underlining Hyundai Motor Group’s confidence in India’s leadership capabilities and the country’s growing importance in its global strategy.

Taking over at a time when India’s automotive industry is witnessing rapid structural change, Garg steps into the role with more than three decades of experience across sales, marketing, strategy and operations. In his first remarks as MD & CEO, he highlighted that India stands at a critical inflection point shaped by innovation, sustainability and changing customer expectations. He reiterated his intent to strengthen Hyundai’s foundations in India while accelerating the company’s transformation toward sustainable growth, advanced technologies and consistently high customer satisfaction, fully aligned with Hyundai’s global vision of “Progress for Humanity.”

Under Garg’s leadership, Hyundai Motor India is expected to sharpen its focus on future mobility solutions, including electric vehicles, hybrids and connected technologies, supported by a long-term investment roadmap of around ₹45,000 crore up to FY 2030. The company will also continue to deepen its commitment to ‘Make in India,’ expand localisation across its manufacturing operations and strengthen its position as a global export hub for emerging markets.

Garg’s elevation reflects continuity as well as confidence in his proven track record at HMIL. During his earlier roles as Head of Sales, Service and Marketing and later as Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, the company delivered three consecutive years of record sales, achieved its highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins, and successfully executed the largest IPO in the history of Indian equity markets in 2024. His tenure also saw Hyundai consolidate its leadership in the SUV segment through a disciplined focus on profitability, digitalisation and customer experience.

Beyond financial performance, Garg is widely regarded for his people-centric leadership style. Initiatives such as “Samarth by Hyundai,” aimed at improving awareness and accessibility for people with disabilities, reflect his emphasis on inclusive growth and community engagement alongside business expansion.

Before joining Hyundai Motor India, Garg built a distinguished career at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he rose to the role of Executive Director overseeing marketing, logistics and parts and accessories. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Delhi Technological University and an MBA from IIM Lucknow, giving him a strong blend of technical knowledge and strategic management expertise.
