Authorities investigating the deadly shooting at Brown University have confirmed that the suspect was found dead with a satchel, two firearms, and material evidence matching the crime scene, according to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.
The suspect, identified as Claudio Valente, a 48-year-old Brown University student and Portuguese national, was discovered Thursday night after an intensive multi-state manhunt. Officials stated that Valente died by suicide. His body was recovered along with items that directly link him to Saturday’s mass shooting on the Ivy League campus, which left two students dead and nine others injured.
During a press briefing, the Attorney General said investigators recovered a satchel and two firearms from the scene where the suspect was found.
Earlier in the investigation, law enforcement agencies swarmed an area in Salem, New Hampshire, after locating an abandoned vehicle believed to be connected to the suspect. The discovery helped authorities narrow their search before ultimately locating Valente.
The Brown University shooting marks one of at least 75 school shootings reported in the United States this year, highlighting ongoing concerns around campus safety and gun violence. University officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and reiterated their commitment to supporting students and staff affected by the tragedy.
