England pacer Brydon Carse had a tough outing on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, as Australia’s top order took him apart during a blistering start to their first innings. Carse conceded 45 runs in just 5 overs, finishing with an economy rate of 9.00, which places him inside the top 10 worst economy rates in a single Test innings in cricket history.

According to updated Test records, Carse joins a list that includes Suresh Raina (11.00), Hasan Mahmud (11.00), and RM Hogg (9.83). He now appears at No. 10, with the caveat that the final position may still change depending on how the remainder of Australia’s innings unfolds.

Carse’s struggles came in contrast to fellow pacer Jofra Archer, who bowled with tight control during a threatening spell, conceding just nine runs in his five overs. But Australia’s aggressive approach—led by Jake Weatherald’s rapid fifty and Marnus Labuschagne’s free-flowing boundaries—left Carse under pressure from the moment he took the ball.

In one expensive over alone, Carse was hit for three boundaries, including two powerful strokes from Labuschagne and one from Weatherald that brought up Australia’s 100 inside 18 overs. Despite the hammering, Carse did manage to pick up the prized wicket of Travis Head, who had earlier been dropped by keeper Jamie Smith.

Carse’s economy rate of 9.00 is now part of a rare statistical group—one of the highest ever recorded by an England bowler in Tests. The ongoing innings will determine whether he remains on this top-10 list or shifts position as Australia’s scoring rate evolves.
