After being taken apart for 23 runs in his first two overs, Brydon Carse has produced the perfect response — claiming the big wicket of Travis Head and breaking Australia’s flying 77-run opening partnership at the Gabba.

Carse, who looked completely off rhythm early on, returned with a fuller ball angling into middle. Head, who had earlier survived a sharp chance dropped by keeper Jamie Smith, tried to whip it away but only managed to flick it straight into the hands of Gus Atkinson at midwicket.

Head departs for 33 off 43 (3 fours, 1 six), and Smith will be breathing easier after that earlier missed opportunity no longer proves costly.

Australia 77/1 (13.1) — trail by 257 runs.

Jake Weatherald remains unbeaten and aggressive at the other end, racing to 40* off 36 balls.
