A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 6 km east of Dayton, Nevada, early Thursday morning at 8:06 AM local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, centred in western Nevada, sent noticeable tremors across nearby towns including Carson City, Reno, Fallon, and parts of Lake Tahoe.
The quake’s shallow depth amplified shaking intensity, prompting residents in multiple counties to report jolts lasting several seconds. As of now, no major damage or injuries have been officially reported, though local authorities are continuing to assess vulnerable structures and infrastructure.
Emergency services in Lyon County and Carson City said they received multiple calls from residents concerned about strong shaking and aftershocks. Experts note that Nevada is one of the most seismically active states in the US, and quakes of this magnitude, while not common, are not unusual along the Walker Lane fault system.
The USGS said aftershocks are likely in the coming hours. Residents have been advised to stay alert and follow updates from local authorities.
More information will be updated as assessments continue.
