India fast bowler Harshit Rana has been officially reprimanded by the ICC for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. The sanction comes for his conduct during the dismissal of Proteas youngster Dewald Brevis.

The ICC confirmed that Harshit breached Article 2.5, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

What happened?

The incident took place in the 22nd over of South Africa’s innings. After dismissing Brevis, Harshit was seen gesturing towards the dressing room, an action the match officials deemed unnecessary and provocative.

As a result:

  • Harshit received an official reprimand

  • One demerit point was added to his disciplinary record

  • He admitted the offence

  • He accepted the sanction imposed by Richie Richardson, Emirates ICC Elite Panel match referee

The ICC also confirmed that this is Harshit’s first offence in the past 24 months.

Business Upturn had reported it earlier

On the same day of the match, Business Upturn had reported that Harshit Rana was likely to face a penalty for his gesture after dismissing Brevis. The ICC’s decision now confirms that early assessment.

No further action expected

Since this is a Level 1 offence, the punishment is limited to a reprimand and demerit point, with no suspension or fine announced. Harshit remains available for selection for the remainder of the series.
