At least four people were killed and 10 others wounded in a mass shooting on Saturday in Stockton, California, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place around 6 p.m. on the 1900 block of Lucille Avenue, a busy street that includes a children’s theater, a Dairy Queen outlet and a martial arts academy.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting happened during a family gathering at a banquet hall. Early findings suggest the attack “may have been a targeted incident,” though investigators are still examining all possibilities. Detectives are working to understand the events leading up to the shooting and identify those involved.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi said both children and adults were among the victims who died. In a live broadcast, she expressed grief over the tragedy, saying families should have been spending the evening together — not waiting at hospitals praying for their loved ones.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Heather Brent said no suspect had been taken into custody as of Saturday evening. Emergency responders transported the wounded to nearby hospitals while authorities secured the scene.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident, calling the shooting “horrific” in a social media post. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said the shooting took place at a child’s birthday party and shared that he was “devastated and angry.”
This remains a developing story and more updates are expected as law enforcement continues its investigation.
