India’s top-ranked tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has claimed that his visa to China was rejected without reason, just days before he was scheduled to represent India at the Australian Open Playoff event.
In an urgent post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Nagal appealed to the Chinese Ambassador to India (@China_Amb_India) and Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson in India (@ChinaSpox_India) for immediate intervention.
“[URGENT] I am supposed to fly to China soon to represent India at the Australian Open Playoff. But my visa was rejected without reason. Your urgent help would be much appreciated,” Nagal wrote.

The 27-year-old, currently India’s No.1 men’s tennis player, has been one of the country’s most consistent performers on the ATP circuit and was expected to participate in the playoff event that determines qualification for the 2025 Australian Open.
The development has drawn attention to the ongoing visa challenges faced by Indian athletes traveling to China for international events. Officials from the All India Tennis Association (AITA) are expected to take up the matter with the concerned authorities to ensure Nagal’s participation is not affected.
