Team India could be forced to make a last-minute change to its Test squad for the upcoming India vs South Africa series, starting November 14 in Kolkata, after Rishabh Pant suffered a fresh injury scare during the ongoing India A vs South Africa A fixture.
Pant, who was making his long-awaited return to competitive red-ball cricket, was struck on his left forearm by a short-pitched delivery from Tshepo Moreki and had to retire hurt on Day 3. The wicketkeeper-batter looked in visible pain after the blow and did not return to bat, prompting concerns over his fitness ahead of the crucial two-match Test series.
Pant’s injury comes just months after his remarkable comeback from a career-threatening car accident and a foot fracture sustained during the England tour. While initial reports suggest the injury may not be severe, the Indian team management is expected to take no risks with the southpaw given his importance in the long-term Test plans.
If Pant is declared unfit, KL Rahul—who is already part of the squad—could take over wicketkeeping duties, having kept wickets in the recent Test series against England. Alternatively, Dhruv Jurel, who has impressed in domestic cricket and is also included in the Test squad, could be handed an opportunity as the specialist wicketkeeper.
The BCCI medical team is likely to assess Pant’s condition over the next 48 hours before taking a final call on his availability for the opening Test.
