Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) suspended all flight operations on Tuesday evening, November 4, after a UPS MD-11 cargo aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff. The crash led to an immediate emergency response and temporary airport shutdown as authorities assessed the situation.

In an official statement, the airport said:

“An aircraft incident occurred at SDF today at approximately 5:20 p.m. involving a UPS MD-11, flight no. 2976 when departing the West Runway (17R/35L) to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, HI. Emergency crews are on-scene at SDF. At this time, all arriving and departing flights at SDF are temporarily suspended and the airfield is closed. Passengers should closely monitor their flight status via their airline’s website or mobile app. All additional updates will be shared to this official account as available.”

The UPS aircraft crashed shortly after departure, prompting a massive emergency response near Fern Valley Road and Grade Lane. Fire services rushed to the scene to control flames, and authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby areas due to smoke and potential debris hazards.

As of the latest update, Louisville Airport remains closed for all arrivals and departures, with no timeline yet announced for resumption of normal operations. The closure remains in place while authorities secure the area and investigators from the FAA and NTSB begin examining the incident.

Passengers are advised to continue checking airline websites and apps for flight status updates and to avoid the area until further notice.

Further updates will be shared once airport operations resume or additional official information is released.
