Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China does not aim “to challenge or replace any country,” stressing that Beijing is focused on its own development. The remarks were released in an official government statement hours after Xi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Xi noted that economic engagement should act as a “ballast stone” in China-US relations, urging both sides to narrow differences and build on the consensus reached by their negotiating teams. He also highlighted “good prospects for cooperation” between the two nations in efforts to curb illegal immigration.
The comments follow high-level talks between the world’s two largest economies as they look to stabilize ties and advance areas of mutual interest.
