Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a Navratna company under the Ministry of Defence, signed an exclusive Teaming Agreement (TA) with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) — India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company. The partnership aims to collaborate on the design and construction of advanced Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) recently approved the acquisition of these LPDs, which will significantly strengthen the Navy’s capability to project power, conduct amphibious operations, and carry out humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.

Under this agreement, MDL will contribute its deep expertise in ship design, project management, and system integration, while SDHI will leverage its state-of-the-art shipbuilding infrastructure — the largest in India — to construct the vessels. Together, both companies will combine their technical and financial strengths to deliver next-generation LPDs that meet the Navy’s strategic requirements.

This collaboration represents a major milestone in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, aligning with the government’s vision of Public–Private Partnership (PPP) and the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. By merging the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the private sector with the proven reliability and quality of a leading public sector enterprise, the partnership is expected to reduce build times, enhance quality, and deliver cost-efficient results for the Indian Navy’s modernization efforts.
