ABB India has strengthened its local manufacturing capabilities with the launch of a new production line for variable speed drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya factory in Bengaluru. This expansion increases the company’s local drive production capacity by nearly 25%, aligning with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
The new line is designed to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient and high-performance drives across sectors such as buildings, data centers, water, cement, and metals. By localizing production, ABB India aims to reduce delivery lead times by up to 40%, ensuring faster turnaround and greater flexibility to meet industry needs.
Equipped with advanced robotics and digital monitoring systems, the production line reflects Industry 4.0 standards. Integrated robotic systems automate key components of the drive assembly process, improving both efficiency and reliability. Real-time digital monitoring enables precision manufacturing, while sensor-based tools ensure accurate component placement and consistent product quality. Robotics have also been introduced to manage the movement of assembled drives, enhancing overall safety and productivity on the factory floor.
The launch comes as ABB celebrates 50 years of global innovation in variable speed drives and 20 years of drive manufacturing excellence in India. Over the decades, ABB’s drives have powered mission-critical applications across industries—ranging from metros and airports to pharmaceuticals and metals—supporting the nation’s industrial growth and energy transition.
Variable speed drives play a vital role in optimizing motor performance by adjusting motor speed to match process demands, helping industries achieve significant energy savings and lower carbon emissions. ABB’s latest production expansion reinforces its leadership in energy-efficient technologies and its long-term commitment to sustainable manufacturing in India.
