In a major boost to India’s defense modernization and self-reliance, the Indian Army has signed a landmark agreement to acquire its first Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured (IDDM) Software Defined Radios (SDRs). The advanced communication systems have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will be produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), according to a report by Alpha Defense.

These next-generation SDRs are equipped with high data rate transmission and Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) capabilities, enabling secure and seamless real-time communication across multiple units and terrains. The new system will enhance coordination and information-sharing among troops, which is crucial for success in network-centric warfare environments.
By adopting these indigenous SDRs, the Indian Army aims to significantly strengthen its operational effectiveness, battlefield connectivity, and tactical communication infrastructure.
