India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently under intensive medical care after suffering internal bleeding due to a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.
According to a PTI report, Iyer, 31, was immediately rushed to the hospital after he complained of discomfort and fluctuating vitals upon returning to the dressing room. He had injured his left rib cage while taking a stunning backward-running catch to dismiss Alex Carey on Saturday.
A source close to the development revealed:
“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding.”
The BCCI medical team acted swiftly, ensuring immediate hospitalization when his condition worsened.
“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.
Initially expected to be sidelined for three weeks, Iyer’s recovery timeline has now been extended, with doctors unwilling to commit to a definite return date.
“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the report stated.
Iyer is likely to remain in Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad.
Fans and teammates have been sending prayers and well-wishes for the Mumbai batter’s speedy recovery.
