Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has sparked a major debate among Premier League fans with his bold claim about who currently rules England’s midfield. The former England international has declared Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali as the best midfielder in the Premier League, even rating him above Arsenal’s £105 million man, Declan Rice.
Speaking about the two players, Scholes said, “Sandro Tonali is the best midfielder in the Premier League, better than Declan Rice. I think he’s been brilliant. I really like Declan, don’t get me wrong, I just think he takes too many touches of the ball too many times. I think he tries to look more stylish than he needs to be.”
The comments have sent shockwaves through social media, as Rice has been widely praised since joining Arsenal from West Ham last summer. However, Scholes believes that while Rice is technically sound, Tonali offers a more dynamic and direct approach in midfield.
“He can be box-to-box, scores goals… just don’t think he does it enough,” Scholes added, hinting that Rice’s game still lacks the attacking edge that Tonali brings to the table.
