Ola Electric Mobility Limited has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first Indian automotive OEM to receive government certification for its in-house developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor. The certification was granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) in Tamil Nadu after the company’s ferrite motor successfully passed rigorous performance verification and motor power tests as per AIS 041 standards notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The ferrite motor—introduced earlier this year at Ola Electric’s Sankalp 2025 event—marks a significant technological leap as it eliminates dependence on imported rare-earth materials. The tests confirmed that the ferrite motor delivers the same performance levels as conventional rare-earth permanent magnet motors in both the 7kW and 11kW variants.
According to Ola Electric, this breakthrough not only enhances performance, efficiency, and durability but also reduces costs and mitigates supply chain vulnerabilities. Following certification, the company plans to integrate the ferrite motor across its entire two-wheeler lineup, making its products more sustainable and affordable for Indian consumers.
Ola Electric operates India’s largest EV manufacturing facility—the Ola Future Factory in Tamil Nadu—and runs a direct-to-customer distribution model with over 4,000 stores nationwide. The company said this development reinforces its commitment to domestic innovation and technological self-reliance in the electric mobility sector.
