The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will be taking a six-month break from red-ball cricket. It is learned that Iyer had written an email to the board, citing recurring back issues as the reason behind his decision.

Despite stepping away from the longer format, Iyer will continue to be available for limited-overs cricket. He has been named captain of the India A squad for the upcoming one-day matches.

Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Sameer Rizvi Shedge, Vipraj Nigam, Nishant Sindhu, Gurjapneet Singh, Yudhvir Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Porel (WK), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh.

The announcement makes it clear that while Iyer is managing his fitness carefully, he remains a vital part of India’s white-ball plans, particularly in the build-up to next year’s international calendar.
