Aston Villa have reached an agreement to appoint Roberto Olabe as their new president of football operations, following the impending departure of Monchi from the role.
Olabe, who exited Real Sociedad at the end of last season, has established a strong reputation as one of Europe’s leading sporting directors. During his tenure with the Basque club, he played a pivotal role in building competitive squads and nurturing talent, earning recognition from several top European sides.
The Spaniard had previously been on Villa’s radar before the club opted to hire Monchi. His proven track record in strategic planning, player recruitment, and long-term squad building also attracted interest from major clubs such as Arsenal and Real Madrid.
The move is expected to be formally announced soon, with Monchi set to leave the position after just over a year in Birmingham. His exit was reported by The Athletic earlier this week, marking the end of a short but impactful stint.
