Born Zubeen Borthakur on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen was raised in Jorhat, Assam. His mother, Ily Borthakur, was a singer and dancer, while his father, Mohini Borthakur, was a poet and magistrate. Zubeen began learning music at the age of three, training in singing under his mother and tabla under Pandit Robin Banerjee for over a decade. He also formally trained in Assamese folk music under Guru Ramani Rai.
Rise to Fame
Zubeen Garg sang in over 40 languages, including Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu. His Bollywood breakthrough came with the hit song “Ya Ali” from the movie Gangster (2006), earning him widespread recognition and awards. Apart from singing, Zubeen was a composer, lyricist, and actor, contributing to Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi cinema through his music.
