The manager feels it was never a penalty and referee favoured Madrid in the game. Madrid won the opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 last night by 2-1. Both the goals were scored by Mbappe and through penalties.
Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi did not hold back after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26. The Italian coach expressed his frustration with the referee’s decision to award Los Blancos a second penalty, which ultimately decided the contest.
Both of Madrid’s goals came from the spot, converted by Kylian Mbappé. But it was the second decision that sparked controversy. De Zerbi strongly disagreed with the call, suggesting the referee favored Madrid on the night.
“The second one was never a penalty, it’s a disgrace. I would have said the same thing even if it was in favor of my team. After their match against Real Sociedad, everyone was talking about the injustice against Real Madrid,” De Zerbi said post-match.
Despite Marseille’s spirited performance, the Ligue 1 side walked away empty-handed, while Real Madrid began their campaign with three points.
