Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bat first against Kings XI Punjab. The defending champions started slow and lost their skipper sooner than they would have liked to. The top order was unable to perform except for Quinton de Kock who has been hitting half-centuries for four consecutive matches now. Even after MI losing consecutive wickets, they had their middle-order come and hit some big runs for the team. Pollard and Coulter Nile played a blistering knock to help the team reach a good total.

At the end of the 20 overs, MI was successful in reaching a score which looked too far when they started playing due to losing wickets so quickly. They scored 176 runs that will be a challenge for Kings XI Punjab to chase looking at the wicket. De Kock was the highest run-scorer for MI and Shami and Arshdeep both took 2 wickets.
