Heavy overnight rainfall wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, causing widespread damage in Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Mussoorie. In Dehradun’s Sahastradhara area, two people were reported missing amid flash flooding and heavy debris flow. Officials from the district administration said residents were evacuated overnight and expressed hope that the missing individuals may be safe but untraceable at present.

District Disaster Management Officer Rishabh Kumar said:

“The roads are blocked but we are working on reaching there. Locals have claimed this was a cloudburst but we are verifying those facts. A few shops have been washed away but there has been no loss of human life.”

Key damages reported

  • Shops, hotels, and commercial structures in the Sahastradhara main market suffered heavy damage. Debris entered multiple shops and two small hotels.

  • Even SDRF and fire department teams could not reach the spot due to road blockages.

  • Debris was spotted near IT Park, with videos of destruction circulating widely on social media.

  • The approach bridge at Maldevta was washed away overnight, cutting off the area completely.

  • The Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple was badly hit, with rubble covering almost the entire premises.

Red alert and school closures

Schools in Dehradun district have been shut for the day as authorities issued a red alert till 9 am, urging people living near river embankments to stay alert.

Rivers in the district, including the Tamsa, Tons, and Song, are in spate. Heavy rainfall-related damages have also been reported from Rishikesh and Mussoorie, further amplifying the crisis.

Officials are still awaiting meteorological data to confirm whether the incident was a cloudburst or an episode of extremely heavy rainfall.
