Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has officially resigned following two days of violent protests across the country led by the Gen Z movement. The demonstrations, triggered by the government’s ban on social media platforms, quickly escalated into a nationwide revolt against corruption and political mismanagement.
Mass protests force resignation
The protests left at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured as police opened fire on demonstrators in Kathmandu and surrounding districts. Protesters set ablaze the residences of Oli, former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sher Bahadur Deuba, as well as multiple ministerial buildings.
Chanting slogans such as “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP thief, leave the country), angry crowds demanded Oli’s immediate exit. The prime minister tendered his resignation to President Ram Chandra Poudel earlier today, sources confirmed.
Airports on alert
Oli’s resignation follows speculation that he might attempt to flee to Dubai via a private jet amid mounting unrest. Protesters had even called for fireworks and blockades near Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport to prevent VIP evacuations.
Next steps
With Oli stepping down, Nepal faces political uncertainty. Protesters are demanding the formation of a national government, strict anti-corruption measures, and political reforms, including a retirement age for office holders.
The President is expected to hold consultations with party leaders later today to chart the way forward.
