Sending money across countries may soon become faster and more affordable for millions with the launch of the UPI–UPU Integration project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai.
The initiative, unveiled by Union Minister for Communication Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, links India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform. It has been developed jointly by India Post, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), and UPU.
How it will work
By connecting UPI with the global postal network, users will be able to send and receive cross-border remittances directly through post offices — at lower costs and higher speed. With the UPU spanning over 190 countries, the move is expected to benefit migrant workers, families, and communities in areas with limited banking access.
Scindia’s statement
Calling the project a major step toward inclusive financial services, Scindia said:
“The reliability of the postal network combined with the speed of UPI means families across borders can send money faster, safer and at much lower cost.”
Wider impact on India
For Indian users, the system promises faster inflows of money from abroad with reduced transfer charges. It is also expected to help small businesses and e-commerce exporters dependent on overseas payments.
The initiative is part of India’s broader push to expand its digital public infrastructure globally. According to official data shared at the event:
-
India Post delivered over 900 million letters and parcels last year

560 million Jan Dhan and India Post Payments Bank accounts have been opened, most in women’s names
