French President Emmanuel Macron will announce the country’s new prime minister in the coming days, the Elysee Palace confirmed on Monday.
The development comes after Prime Minister Francois Bayrou lost a parliamentary confidence vote, with 364 lawmakers voting against him and only 194 in his favor. Bayrou is expected to formally tender his resignation to Macron on Tuesday.
Bayrou’s government fell amid growing concerns over the 2026 budget, which proposed €40 billion in spending cuts and was deemed too divisive to gain parliamentary approval. The rejection has triggered renewed political uncertainty in France, forcing Macron to quickly seek a successor who can steer the government through the contentious budget process.
