Russia’s military has claimed responsibility for eliminating a small group of Ukrainian fighters in the Sumy region, part of what it says is an effort to expand its buffer zone along the border.
Details of the operation
According to Russia’s defense channels, the attack was carried out using a combination of strike aircraft and reconnaissance drones operated by the army’s North Group. The drones reportedly provided real-time intelligence and coordinated directly with Russian infantry on the ground.
A Russian officer, identified only by the call sign “Wind”, said the UAV teams enabled precise targeting during the operation. The officer further claimed that one Ukrainian fighter was killed by small arms fire, while two others were eliminated in drone strikes.
Buffer zone expansion
Moscow has repeatedly stated its intention to create a broader buffer zone along the Russian-Ukrainian border, particularly in regions like Sumy, to protect its territory from cross-border attacks. The latest claim underscores ongoing escalations in northern Ukraine, even as fighting continues in the east and south.
Kyiv yet to respond
As of now, Ukrainian officials have not issued a statement confirming or denying the Russian military’s claims regarding the reported incident near Sumy
