Air raid sirens echoed across Kyiv on Wednesday as the capital braced for potential missile and drone attacks. The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, confirmed the alarm, urging residents to seek shelter. “Air defense is working in Kyiv! Stay in shelters until the alarm goes off,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram. Authorities further cautioned that “the danger of enemy missiles remains.”
Strikes across regions
The renewed alarm in Kyiv comes amid a series of intensified Russian strikes across Ukraine:
-
In the Kherson region, Russian shelling of Bilozerka killed a 73-year-old man, according to Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
-
A drone attack on Horodnia in the Chernihiv region left two people injured, including a 14-year-old girl, Governor Viacheslav Chaus confirmed.
-
In the Sumy region, Governor Oleh Hryhorov reported seven injuries and widespread damage to homes following heavy shelling. The attacks also disrupted water and energy supplies, according to Ukrinform.
Civilian toll
The Crimean Tatar Resource Centre, a human rights group, said Russia’s occupation of Crimea has already led to the deaths of 15 children, while dozens more were impacted by the killing or disappearance of their parents.
Meanwhile, the start of the new academic year highlights the strain of the conflict on everyday life. In Kharkiv, around 17,000 students are now attending classes in underground schools designed to shield them from frequent Russian strikes.
Russia’s claims
Russia’s Ministry of Defence, as reported by state news agency TASS, claimed its forces intercepted 260 Ukrainian drones and three rockets in the past 24 hours.
