Just days after bidding farewell to the Indian Premier League (IPL), veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has confirmed his next step in franchise cricket. Ashwin has officially registered for the International League T20 (ILT20) 2026 auction, marking the beginning of his post-IPL career in overseas leagues.
From IPL retirement to global leagues
Ashwin, who announced his IPL retirement three days ago, had already hinted that he was eyeing new opportunities around the world. While making his announcement, he said:
“They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
That “new start” is now in motion, with the seasoned spinner adding his name to the upcoming ILT20 auction pool.
ILT20 switches to auction system
The UAE-based tournament, which had previously used a draft system, will for the first time hold a player auction on September 30, 2025, in Dubai. Ashwin confirmed his participation, telling Cricbuzz:
“I have sent my name for the ILT20 auction. Hopefully, I will have a buyer.”
The 2026 edition of the ILT20 will run from December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026, featuring six franchises:
-
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders
-
Desert Vipers
-
Dubai Capitals
-
Gulf Giants
-
MI Emirates
-
Sharjah Warriors
Fourth Indian in ILT20 history
If picked, Ashwin will become only the fourth Indian cricketer to feature in the tournament after Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, and Ambati Rayudu. Given his stature and all-round capabilities, he is widely expected to attract bids from multiple franchises.
Ashwin’s move marks another milestone in his illustrious career, as he transitions from India and IPL commitments to embracing the global T20 circuit. For fans, it opens the prospect of watching one of cricket’s modern greats bring his skills to new audiences in the UAE.
